Description

These are German military Galillean Binoculars, standard issue to NCOs in the 1st WW. They were produced by nearly every German Optical manufacturer.

This fine example, is manufactured in brass, with an intact aluminium rainguard. [ Benutzencap] It is in excellent condition, and the original gray/green, “field” finish is virtually complete, with only minor blemishes of age and use.

The optics are …6 X 39, with individual eye focus, and are surprisingly good for this type of instrument. These binoculars carry 2 numbers …365197 on the the forward roundplate, and 49571 on the clamp wheel, which is also inscribed ..” Fernglass 08 Goerz Berlin”. On one side of the rear hinge arm is the date ? 16 [ 1916]

There is what appears to be an original and intact neck sling, in vg condition.

The matching leather case is in excellent original condition, with sound stitching, belt straps, closing straps, metal lid retainer, and is clearly stamped; “C.P.Goerz AG/Berlin”. The interior is lined with original white felt, with complete operating instructions fixed to the lid interior [In German]. The leather is to a fine brown patina of age.

This is the finest and most complete example I have seen, of this sort after piece of German 1st WW memorabilia.

GB Millais Antiques

I have dealt in Antique Arms and Armour for about 35 years, and my interest began as a school boy during the 2nd WW.
After leaving my home town of Leicester, I went to University, and qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Guys Hospital in 1961 .
My main interests are British and North American Arms of the 18th, 19th,and early 20th Century, plus a few Continental items.
It was 14 years ago that I retired from Dentistry. However, I have continued running my Antiques business, initially while still in practice, and now make most of my sales online, but still exhibit at a number of specialized Antique Arms and Militaria Fairs eg .. Bisley, Bristol, and also at the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, Sussex.
I also deal in Period Scientific Instruments, mainly of a military association, and have a full listing on www.fleaglass.com.
