Offered for sale is a very good example, of this Iconic, and rare Model 1876, Winchester repeating rifle, in the rare obsolete caliber of 40-60, with a 28" Octagonal Barrel, clear address/patent, and serial number 52308, indicating manufacture in 1886. Complete with an original certificate of authenticity, issued by the Winchester Historical Museum/Archives, Cody Wyoming.

Description

Offered for sale is a very good example, of this Iconic, and rare Model 1876, Winchester repeating rifle, in the rare obsolete caliber of 40-60. It has a fine, 28″ octagonal barrel, in vg condition, now to a thinned blue/gray patina. The standard early Winchester address/patents is clearly stamped to the barrel top flat, just in front of the rear buckhorn sight. There is a blade foresight, The receiver is to a smooth gray patina [ no pitting]. There is a standard sliding Dust cover to the top of the receiver. Model 1876 stamped to the top rear shoulder stock retaining Tang. The full length tubular magazine is securely attached to the bottom of the barrel. The serial number ..52308 …. is clearly stamped to the lower metal shoulder stock retaining tang. Loading of cartridges is via a sprung entry to the RHS of the receiver [ 12 cartridges.
The 2 piece original walnut stock is in very good condition, with only minor dings of age and use, and now to a fine dark, grained patina of age.
The underlever action is sound and tight, and the gunmetal falling block is also stamped 40-60. There is a sliding access to the rear, crescent shaped butt cap, where a cleaning rod would have been placed [ missing, as is usual].
To complete this fine and rare Winchester Rifle, is an original Certificate of authenticity/originality, issued by the Winchester Historical Archives, in Cody, Wyoming, confirming that this rifle was received in the Winchester warehouse on March 31st 1886, and shipped out from the warehouse, on April 5th 1886, under order number 5506.
The Model 1876 , aka “The Centennial Model”, was the rarest of all the models made by Winchester Arms Company, and was made from 1876 to 1898, with a total of 63871 in all calibers. This Model 1876 was the last of the type that basically worked with linked levers and toggles [ same as the Model 1873] .. to be succeeded by the Model 1886
