Both are to a plumb gray smooth patina, with no blemishes, and a very clear Winchester Address stamped to the top flat. The caliber .50 EX is stamped to the rear top of the barrel. There is a standard buckhorn rear sight, and adjustable foresight.
The rifled bore is of a high grade, with only salt & pepper minor stains.
The receiver, forecap, buttcap, and under lever, are all in very good condition, now to a grey/silver patina of age, with no pitting or obvious blemishes. .
There is a quality 2 piece, original walnut stock, with only very minor dings of age and wear, now to a fine grained patina of age. It has a flat butt cap, instead of the more usual curved shape. This is to absorb the much greater recoil that this large calibre would produce, when fired.
All patents, and Model stampings are clear … the serial number is # 61880 C1891.
The action is strong and firm.
This is one of the most classic Winchester Rifles made, and was very popular with Frontiersmen, and also for game hunting, especially in the USA and Africa.
The Model 1886 was manufactured between 1886 and 1922, with a total number of C159000 in many calibres.
It is now getting more and more difficult to find decent Winchester Rifles, such as is this one, especially in this particular large calibre.
