Description

Offered for Sale is this very fine example of the main Long arm of the British Military of this period, and the most common style of the P/53, which was manufactured between 1858 and 1863. It is this model that formed the bulk of these muskets sold to both combatants in the American Civil War. This particular example exhibits all the salient features, with a 39 in round barrel, retaining a very high % of blue finish, a bladed foresight, and a rear ladder sight to 900 yards. The lock is in fine condition, and is stamped “Crown/VR”/ “Tower”/ 1860″/Issue Mark” . The barrel has 3 typical screw-clamping barrel bands. The 3 groove rifled bore is in excellent condition, and is in 0.577 in Caliber. There is brass furniture to the trigger guard and butt cap, which is clearly stamped “V/Mx32/72”..Indicating that this rifle was issued to the 32nd Middlesex Volunteers. The original one piece walnut stock is in superb condition, with only very minor dings to the finely grained wood work, now to a pleasing patinated colour of age. Stamped to the RHS of the Butt Stock, is a very clear Roundel, showing “Birmingham/WD/1860”. Also, stamped to the underside of the Shoulder Stock are 2 clear inspectors marks, and “King & Philippes”. The Percussion Action is strong and sound, to both 1/2 and full cock.. Complete with a white, Buff leather sling, attached to the Rifle by original sling swivels. O/a, this is the finest condition example of the P/53 that has ever passed through my hands. Overall length 55 inches.
