Description

Offered for sale is this Antique Pair of English Flintlock Travelling Pistols, of a very unusual and interesting origin.. They are an Exact pair in every way, with an o/a length of 11 inches, with round barrels of 6-1/2 inches, of 20 bore.. Both are clearly stamped “London”, and to a smooth, plum/brown patina.. The one piece walnut stocks have a nice patination of age, and the curved grips are finely checkered, with a smooth plain area to Left & Right sides. Both have a very fine, superficial hairline crack to the underside, in front of the finely engraved trigger guard, rear tang, and front pineapple finial. There is a roller Frizzen to both pistols, a hinged Steel strike plate, finely constructed hammers, with original cocks and flints. The all weather pans are compact and deep. The touchhole is gold lined. The lock to each pistol is of identical design, have a sliding safety, but one is signed “Staudenmeyer”, and the other “J Wilkinson”.
It is thought that these must have been apprentice pieces, and please note that Staudenmeyer was an apprentice to J. Manton, and died in 1825. The connection with Wilkinson is more obscure.
Both pistols have wooden ramrods with horn tips, retained by 2 steel pipes. Both pistols have a strong action to 1/2 and full cock

GB Millais Antiques

I have dealt in Antique Arms and Armour for about 35 years, and my interest began as a school boy during the 2nd WW.
After leaving my home town of Leicester, I went to University, and qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Guys Hospital in 1961 .
My main interests are British and North American Arms of the 18th, 19th,and early 20th Century, plus a few Continental items.
It was 14 years ago that I retired from Dentistry. However, I have continued running my Antiques business, initially while still in practice, and now make most of my sales online, but still exhibit at a number of specialized Antique Arms and Militaria Fairs eg .. Bisley, Bristol, and also at the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, Sussex.
I also deal in Period Scientific Instruments, mainly of a military association, and have a full listing on www.fleaglass.com.
