Description

This is a very fine example of a British military Rifle, that began life as a Model P53 Muzzle loading percussion Musket. It was a Mk 3, and as such is stamped to the lock plate…. “Enfield 1859″, and a Royal crown.
It was then refurbished at the London Armoury Co in 1861 [ There is a roundall to this effect stamped to the Shoulder Stock].
Around 1866, it was then Converted to firing a metallic cartridge …the Snider mechanism is a type 11.
In it’s existing form, it has a 39” round barrel, with a thinning smooth blued finish. It has a vg rifled bore, and the breech mechanism takes a .577 calibre metallic cartridge. The action to 1/2 & full cock is sound, and there is a cap, retained by a chain, to protect the CF plunger.
The original one piece walnut stock is in vg condition, with minor dings and bruises of use, and now to a patina of age.
Apart from the roundall, there is “DC” also stamped to the shoulder stock …. indicating that this rifle was issued to the Canadian Army, in the District of Columbia.
There are 3 barrel bands, a rear ladder sight to 900 yards, and an original clearing/ramrod.
The leather sling appears to be original, attached to the rifle by 2 sling swivels.
O/a, a fine example of a rifle that had 2 lives, and is in excellent condition.
The o/a length is 55″.
There is an original socket bayonet, with scabbard available, at extra cost.

GB Millais Antiques

I have dealt in Antique Arms and Armour for about 35 years, and my interest began as a school boy during the 2nd WW.
After leaving my home town of Leicester, I went to University, and qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Guys Hospital in 1961 .
My main interests are British and North American Arms of the 18th, 19th,and early 20th Century, plus a few Continental items.
It was 14 years ago that I retired from Dentistry. However, I have continued running my Antiques business, initially while still in practice, and now make most of my sales online, but still exhibit at a number of specialized Antique Arms and Militaria Fairs eg .. Bisley, Bristol, and also at the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, Sussex.
I also deal in Period Scientific Instruments, mainly of a military association, and have a full listing on www.fleaglass.com.
