Description

Offered for Sale, is a most interesting example of this popular Antique US pocket Derringer pistol. With a standard 3″ superposed hinged double barrel, in .41Calibre Rim Fire. The rifled bore is in vg condition. A full, Remington address is clearly stamped to the flat rib of the top barrel, which indicates that this is a 3rd Model, manufactured from 1888 to 1912. There is a standard frame. The barrels can be swung open for loading, and there is a cartridge ejector. Hinges are sound. Action to 1/2 and full cock is sound. The Nickel plate finish is original, showing small areas of wear.
Inscribed to the rear grip backstrap ..”J.L..McCaskey” It seems that he was a Businessman from Philadelphia, USA, around the 1890s.
It was he who probably instructed a Jeweller, or even a Gun Retailer, to have this pistol cased. The case is made from Clothboard, the interior close fitted in firm Burgandy Red coloured felt for the pistol, a cloth hinge lid the interior lined with Burgandy red satin. The exterior is also lined with finely hatched Morocco leather, also to a Burgandy red colour. The case measures
6-1/4″ X 3-1/2″ X 2″. and is in o/a excellent and original condition. The lid has a brass snap clasp.
Please note that most pistols such as this were delivered in simple Cardboard boxes, but were often then re cased to a higher quality, as is this example.
The history of the owner is worthy of further research on the Internet.

GB Millais Antiques

I have dealt in Antique Arms and Armour for about 35 years, and my interest began as a school boy during the 2nd WW.
After leaving my home town of Leicester, I went to University, and qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Guys Hospital in 1961 .
My main interests are British and North American Arms of the 18th, 19th,and early 20th Century, plus a few Continental items.
It was 14 years ago that I retired from Dentistry. However, I have continued running my Antiques business, initially while still in practice, and now make most of my sales online, but still exhibit at a number of specialized Antique Arms and Militaria Fairs eg .. Bisley, Bristol, and also at the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, Sussex.
I also deal in Period Scientific Instruments, mainly of a military association, and have a full listing on www.fleaglass.com.
