Description

A stunning pair of these very Iconic 2nd WW. German U-Boat Binoculars, by Carl Zeis, with a maginification of 7 X 50.
There were 3 models made in total, with the 3rd model, as this example is, identified by the rubber armouring, on the shoulder area, and larger diameter eyepieces.
The lenses are coated, and blemish free [any apparent marks in the photos, are just reflections].
To a standard light green paint work which has been finely and expertly restored, to a superb, and smooth finish.
Beneath the rubber armour, and stamped to the RHS shoulder, is “blc/53796” , which is the 2nd WW German code for the firm of Carl Zeiss, plus it’s serial number.
It has the standard fixed focus, and is complete with it’s original eyepiece shield , aka “Benutzerkappe”, made in Bakerlite, clearly stamped, and retained by it’s original rubber cord. There is a complete, and possibly original, leather neck sling.
Optics are fantastic, with a clear and unblemished image.
Please note that there is, beneath the rubber armour, an adjustment screw to each eyepiece, which can re focus this instrument if necessary.
The o/a height is … 7-3/4 inches [ 20 cms].
These binoculars originally came in a transportation case, containing 10 instruments.
This example is now presented in a later, fitted hardwood case, with a hinged lid, internal lining, and lid retaining catches … in excellent and undamaged condition ..NB that the design is based on the type of individual case as issued with the larger German 8 X 60 binoculars.
Case measures … 10-3/4 inches X 10-3/4″ X 5 inches, and has a white metal carrying handle.
Finally, I did not attempt to photo the inscription to the RHS shoulder, as forcing back the rubber armoured cover upon itself, can cause damage.

GB Millais Antiques

I have dealt in Antique Arms and Armour for about 35 years, and my interest began as a school boy during the 2nd WW.
After leaving my home town of Leicester, I went to University, and qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Guys Hospital in 1961 .
My main interests are British and North American Arms of the 18th, 19th,and early 20th Century, plus a few Continental items.
It was 14 years ago that I retired from Dentistry. However, I have continued running my Antiques business, initially while still in practice, and now make most of my sales online, but still exhibit at a number of specialized Antique Arms and Militaria Fairs eg .. Bisley, Bristol, and also at the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, Sussex.
I also deal in Period Scientific Instruments, mainly of a military association, and have a full listing on www.fleaglass.com.
