British Service Martini Henry Artillery Carbine Mark 1, in 450/577 Caliber, Dated 1879

Stock Number: 20170609A

Sold

Offered for sale is this rare, and hard to find, Antique British Military Service Artillery Mk 1 Carbine, in the obsolete 450/577 calibre. This was developed to provide and improve much needed features to Garrison, Horse and Field Artillery Units, principally, the ability to fix a Bayonet. Also, the provision of a sling swivel to the heel of the buttstock, and one to the fore stock barrel band. The clearing rod is the correct one and design for the Mk1, and is designed to accept the bayonet, when fitted.
Therefore, this example is a true Mark 1 carbine, and is not, as came later, Mark 11s, which were cut down MH Rifles.
They were made from 1878- 1889, and the Mk 11 1893-1896
The Mk 1 was approved in July 1879, and this example was a very early one, as it is dated 1879.
This Carbine is in Superb original condition, with a 21.375 inch round barrel, retaining a very high % of blue finish. The fore end is designed to take the pattern 1879 Sword Bayonet, with the standard bayonet bar. There is a foresight.
The receiver is very clearly stamped."Crown/V.R/Enfield/1879/Issue Stamp/I.C.I".
The rear ladder sight is to 1000 yards. All metal work is clearly fully stamped with ordnance marks. The under lever action is sound and crisp. The rifled bore is clear, and virtually blemish free. The 2 piece walnut stock is original, in excellent condition, with only very minor dings and bruises. There is an Enfield roundel , stamped to the RHS of the butt stock. The woodwork is nicely grained, and now to a fine patina of age.
Overall length is 37.687 inches, and in excellent condition.
Please note that I have available for sale, an original Pattern 1879 sword bayonet, complete with it's scabbard [ see website, and priced separatly].

GB Millais Antiques

I have dealt in Antique Arms and Armour for about 35 years, and my interest began as a school boy during the 2nd WW.
After leaving my home town of Leicester, I went to University, and qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Guys Hospital in 1961 .
My main interests are British and North American Arms of the 18th, 19th,and early 20th Century, plus a few Continental items.
It was 14 years ago that I retired from Dentistry. However, I have continued running my Antiques business, initially while still in practice, and now make most of my sales online, but still exhibit at a number of specialized Antique Arms and Militaria Fairs eg .. Bisley, Bristol, and also at the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, Sussex.
I also deal in Period Scientific Instruments, mainly of a military association, and have a full listing on www.fleaglass.com.
