Description

These were made C1873-78, with a total production of 9000.
They were serial numbered in 2 ranges ..1-8700, and the 2nd range 167000 – 200614. This example falls into this range…200291.
These revolvers were in 44 Colt Cenrefire, with a 6 shot rebated cylinder, and normally with an 8″ round barrel. However, this example has been cut down to 6″ round barrel. The probable reason was that this type of revolver was very popular with gunfighters, who preferred a shorter barrel length, for ease of withdrawing from the holster.
There is an ejector rod attached to the RHS of the barrel.
All metal is now to a dark grey smooth patina, and no pitting.
The full Colt address is stamped to the barrel top, now fading, but legible.
To the LHS frame ..”Colts Patent”.
The trigger guard is brass, with “44 Cal” stamped to the left hand shoulder.
The one piece walnut grip is original, and is in generally good condition, with minor dings, no splits, and a small piece missing from the LHS lower bottom aspect, next to the frame strap.
Action to I/2 and full cock is strong and sound.
The rifled bore is in excellent unblemished condition.
To complete, there is a standard loading gate to the rear aspect of the RHS of the cylinder.
A now very difficult model to find, and was not only very popular at the time of manufacture, but is now very sort after by collectors of Western memorabilia.

I have dealt in Antique Arms and Armour for about 35 years, and my interest began as a school boy during the 2nd WW.
After leaving my home town of Leicester, I went to University, and qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Guys Hospital in 1961 .
My main interests are British and North American Arms of the 18th, 19th,and early 20th Century, plus a few Continental items.
It was 14 years ago that I retired from Dentistry. However, I have continued running my Antiques business, initially while still in practice, and now make most of my sales online, but still exhibit at a number of specialized Antique Arms and Militaria Fairs eg .. Bisley, Bristol, and also at the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, Sussex.
I also deal in Period Scientific Instruments, mainly of a military association, and have a full listing on www.fleaglass.com.
