Description

This is a very interesting 1st WW pattern 1897 Sword, manufactured by… “J.R Gaunt & Son/Limited/Late/Edward Thurkle/London/&/Birmingham”.
The 33″ polished steel blade, is finely etched to both sides, with Royal Crown over “GR V”, to the LHS, and to the RHS, is etched …”Presented To Major.S.J. Tinner/ By Lieut.Colonel L.A. Dowie June 22nd 1918″.
The blade is in excellent condition, with only minor spots of stain, no nicks, or corrosion. There is a standard Proof Mark to the RHS recasse.
The hilt has a standard polished and decorated hilt guard, mounted with the George V Motif, and the grip is covered with intact, wire bound fish skin.
The scabbard is standard Field issue leather, in vg condition, complete with it’s leather Frog, and 2 leather, and buckled, hangers.
There is a leather strap and pommel attached to the hilt basket.
Initial research, reveals that “Sydney Jonathan Tinner”, and “Lawrence Adam Dowie”, were in the Canadian General List toward the latter part of the Great War, and further research will hopefully reveal more information about their respective Army careers, leading up to the reason for this presentation sword.

GB Millais Antiques

I have dealt in Antique Arms and Armour for about 35 years, and my interest began as a school boy during the 2nd WW.
After leaving my home town of Leicester, I went to University, and qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Guys Hospital in 1961 .
My main interests are British and North American Arms of the 18th, 19th,and early 20th Century, plus a few Continental items.
It was 14 years ago that I retired from Dentistry. However, I have continued running my Antiques business, initially while still in practice, and now make most of my sales online, but still exhibit at a number of specialized Antique Arms and Militaria Fairs eg .. Bisley, Bristol, and also at the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, Sussex.
I also deal in Period Scientific Instruments, mainly of a military association, and have a full listing on www.fleaglass.com.
