A very good and fine quality rifled flintlock 16 bore. travelling pistol, by the as yet unrecorded maker … “Howell & Simmons”.
With a fine twist browned 5 inch, round barrel, with a flat top, and has fine deep rifling, with no pitting. It has a front sight, and an engraved tang, fitted with a rear sight.
There are two gold lines to the breech, and oval gold makers stamp to the border engraved lock, and breech …. “Howell & Simmons”.
There is a Swan neck cock, with some engraving, half cock safety, with a very crisp working lock and steel.
The steel furniture and trigger guard end in a pineapple finial, and are engraved..
The original full walnut stock has well executed, fine chequering to the grip, minor dings and bruises, of age and use, and to a pleasing patina, commensurate to an item made C 1770. It has a vacant, oval white metal escutcheon to the rear aspect of the grip/stock. The removable and original ramrod is eboniised and has a tortoiseshell end.

After leaving my home town of Leicester, I went to University, and qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Guys Hospital in 1961 .
My main interests are British and North American Arms of the 18th, 19th,and early 20th Century, plus a few Continental items.
It was 14 years ago that I retired from Dentistry. However, I have continued running my Antiques business, initially while still in practice, and now make most of my sales online, but still exhibit at a number of specialized Antique Arms and Militaria Fairs eg .. Bisley, Bristol, and also at the IACF Fairs, at Ardingly, Sussex.
